Description:
In 1972, Mr Keeley realised that poaching and hunting had utterly decimated the wildlife in Africa and actively started buying up more farmland to create a haven for all wildlife, to breed antelope for the game farm market, and to provide a place where tourism could thrive and contribute to the eco development of the region.

By 1983, Sable Ranch was formed, which is situated in the North West Province of the Republic of South Africa. Sable Ranch was registered in 1991 as a Natural Proclaimed Heritage Site with the SA Natural Heritage program of 1920. It was a declaration that recognised the dramatic improvement to the fauna and flora of the region as a direct result of Mr. Keeley’s intervention. Since 1989, this has been supported by the pro-active breeding of rare species like Sable Antelope, which consist of Zimbabwe, Tanzanian and West Zambian gene pools, Roan Antelope, and disease free East African Buffalo.

The farm covers about 4500ha and is situated approximately 30km north of Brits in the Veekraal area. The Ranch consist of broken granite outcrops and Magalies bushveld woodland with red bushwillow (Combretum apiculatum) as the dominant species. It is very picturesque and a haven for predator species such as leopards.

Red Data species that occur on the site are Sable Antelope (Hippotragus Nigger), African Rock Python (Python Sebae), Martial Eagle (Polemaetus Bellicosus), Blue Duiker (Philantomba monticola) and Roan Antelope (Hippotragus Equines).

There is also 280+ species of birds which include some rare examples such as the Black Eagle, Black-Headed Oriole and Crimson-Breasted Shrike. The elegant homestead-styled game lodge named Thaba Khaya Lodge is set on a granite outcrop on the reserve and welcomes guests throughout the year from all over the world.
